JAMESBURG, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. When a wildfire threatens the hills of eastern Carmel Valley, knowing only a neighborhood name may not be enough to interpret an emergency alert. Monterey County’s emergency-preparedness program, Ready Monterey County, instructs residents to identify and save their official evacuation-zone code before a fire or other disaster occurs.

For Jamesburg and Tassajara Road residents, this is especially practical because the community relies on rural roads that may be affected by storms, wildfire response or agency closures. This is a preparedness guide, not an announcement of a new evacuation warning or active emergency on October 29.

Step one: check your exact address

The county’s Know Your Zone instructions direct residents to Genasys Protect. Enter the address of your own home, rental or business and save the zone identifier. Monterey County says its zones use three geographic letters plus three digits. Do not assume everyone in Jamesburg or along Tassajara Road belongs to a single zone. Adjacent properties and routes may be categorized differently.

Step two: sign up for emergency notifications

The county’s emergency-information portal provides access to local alerts, current incidents and an incident map. The county’s Alert Monterey County system can contact registered subscribers through channels such as text messages, calls or email, according to its published registration guidance. The wildfire-preparedness page also instructs readers to text MCWildfire to 888777 for wildfire-specific alerts.

An app notification, text message, electronic map and news article are not substitutes for obeying instructions directly issued by emergency officials. Keep more than one way to receive information, including an option that does not depend solely on home broadband service.

What is the difference between a warning and an order?

Ready Monterey County explains that an Evacuation Warning means residents should be prepared to leave at any time. An Evacuation Order instructs people in the affected area to leave immediately. If you believe you are in immediate danger, officials advise leaving without waiting for a further alert. People who need extra time to move children, people with disabilities, livestock or pets should plan accordingly.

Prepare for more than one route

Before an emergency, identify likely routes but understand that a previously usable forest road may be closed in a fire. Keep medications, important documents, necessary supplies, pet equipment and a household contact plan ready. Check current Caltrans QuickMap, county road notices and incident instructions instead of assuming a trail or backroad is a safe evacuation route.

For the separate federal closure affecting parts of the Tassajara Road area, see our Jamesburg forest-closure report.
