JAMESBURG, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. Residents and visitors using the remote Tassajara Road corridor should not assume that the end of major wildfire activity means every forest road and recreation area has reopened. Monterey County’s public road-closure listing identifies a restriction at 39171 Tassajara Road that began August 30 following the Timber Fire. Separately, a federal emergency closure order still covers designated parts of the Monterey Ranger District of Los Padres National Forest.
The two notices serve different purposes. The county’s road listing addresses access at a specified road location; the U.S. Forest Service order concerns identified federal lands, roads and trails. Neither notice should be read as saying every home, private driveway or road in the entire Jamesburg community is closed.
County listing for Tassajara Road
On the Monterey County road closures page, the Tassajara Road entry identifies 39171 Tassajara Road and a closure beginning August 30, 2026, with the end described as “until further notice.” The site says conditions and schedules can change.
This is a published advisory, not an independently observed real-time road check. People planning a trip should consult the county road map and local authorities before departure, particularly where a route crosses multiple jurisdictions or access controls.
Federal forest order runs through January 31 unless revised
According to the September 26 update on CAL FIRE’s Timber Fire incident page, the U.S. Forest Service issued an updated Monterey Ranger District Emergency Closure Order, 05-07-51-26-11. That order replaced an August restriction and was set to remain effective through January 31, 2027, unless modified or rescinded sooner.
The agency identified portions of Tassajara Road, the North, Central and South Coast Ridge roads, Nacimiento-Fergusson Road and several additional forest roads as restricted. Numerous trails are also included in designated closure areas. The order’s mapped boundaries are important: a road name appearing in the list does not by itself mean every segment is closed.
Residents and property access: do not confuse a forest closure with an evacuation order
CAL FIRE’s September update described exceptions for authorized public officials and emergency personnel, qualifying owners, lessees and residents accessing private property, and individuals with applicable Forest Service authorization. The conditions of the actual order and posted signs control access; the exceptions should not be interpreted as blanket permission to enter closed recreation lands.
A forest-area access restriction also is not the same thing as an active evacuation order. Emergency evacuation status can change independently. Residents should use the county’s official emergency notification system for evacuation information and avoid relying on an old incident summary alone.

For Jamesburg-area neighbors: the most useful question is whether the specific road segment needed for a journey is open to the traveler under the current order. Check the latest map, not an older social post, and contact the relevant agency if access to private property is unclear.
