JAMESBURG, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. Residents of rural Jamesburg and the Tassajara Road corridor should check wildfire restrictions before burning brush or other residential yard vegetation. CAL FIRE’s public Current Residential Burn Status page lists “Burning Suspended” in Monterey County’s State Responsibility Areas (SRA), with an effective date of May 1, 2026, at 8 a.m.
This is a jurisdiction-specific state fire-prevention rule, not a claim that every property in Monterey County is subject to identical burn restrictions. Property owners need to verify whether their parcel is in an SRA or another fire jurisdiction and whether additional local air-pollution or fire rules apply.
What does CAL FIRE’s status page tell residents?
CAL FIRE’s official burn-permit status table identifies county-by-county restrictions for residential burning. Monterey County is listed under the suspension effective May 1. The state advises residents that even in areas where burning is shown as allowed, they must confirm that the local air district has declared a permissive burn day. A burn permit alone never overrides a suspension.
How does this apply near Jamesburg?
Jamesburg’s steep terrain and vegetation make planning and debris management especially important. But a countywide SRA status is not the same as a property-specific determination. To confirm rules for a home or parcel, start with CAL FIRE’s online permit service and contact the local fire authority. Residents should not rely on a neighbor’s experience or last year’s burn season schedule.
Officials can separately authorize carefully managed prescribed burns for vegetation management under formal plans and permits. Those operations should not be confused with ordinary residential debris burning. The Monterey Bay Air Resources District publishes information about permitted prescribed fire activity in the region.
What to do with vegetation instead
Residents planning fire-safe property maintenance can first ask their local solid-waste provider about brush or green-waste disposal and check official vegetation-management requirements. Never burn treated wood, household waste or other materials on the assumption that they fall under a simple residential debris permit. The article makes no determination about which materials are legal on any particular property.
Related forest access rules
Restrictions on open residential burning are different from National Forest emergency closures. Our separate Jamesburg report on Tassajara Road and the Los Padres National Forest closure covers road and land access, not residential burn-permit eligibility.
